Introduction to hand-building: Mini Planter

Connect with clay and get in touch with your natural being.

What you’ll make.

In this class, the tutor will show you a range of different planter forms and functions. We will explore surface decoration techniques, including the use of different tools to create textures, and underglazes to add colour to your planter. You will then create your very own planter, ready to house your finest herbaceous friend! Your piece will be glazed and fired after class and will be ready for collection from the studio in 3-4 weeks.

What you’ll learn.

You will use a mixture of coiling and slab building techniques to create a unique form and successfully attach handles, lugs and other three-dimensional decorative elements to your vase. You will also be shown how to create different textural effects, using a range of sculpting and trimming tools and gestural mark making.

Skill level: Beginner to intermediate.

This is a beginner class accessible to people with no previous experience, and those who’ve dabbled before. You must be 15+ to attend this class.

Class length: 2 hrs.

This is a one-off 2hr introductory hand-building class - enough time to get a taste of what’s possible, pick up some new skills and create something you’ll be proud of!

The vibe: Naturally relaxing.

Nothing could be more natural than hand-making with clay and creating a home for the plants we love.

Get dressed for success.

Wear something that’s easy to clean, or that you don’t mind getting a bit dirty. Covered shoes are ideal and think about keeping long hair out of the way.

The boring bits.

Classes are non-refundable however you may reschedule by email up to 24 hours prior to your class.

Unfortunately, the kiln gods are a capricious bunch and while we do our best to minimise the possibility, breakages may happen during firing. We cannot offer refunds for damaged items.
