Introduction to hand-building: Make a serving platter

Hand-craft a ceramic centrepiece that becomes the talk of the table.

What you’ll make.

At first we will explore a range of different design possibilities, surface decoration techniques and illustrative styles to apply to your design. You will then create your very own platter, ready to show off at your next soirée (“Oh this? It’s just something I knocked up a while ago…”). Your piece will be glazed and fired after class, and will be ready for collection from the studio in 3-4 weeks.

What you’ll learn.

This class is all about the slab building technique, rolling, cutting, joining and attaching three-dimensional decorative elements to create your platter. Once you have created your canvas, we will explore how to make the most of it with different decorative effects made using a range of sculpting and trimming tools or underglaze colours.

Skill level: Beginner to intermediate.

This is a beginner class accessible to people with no previous experience, and those who’ve dabbled before. You must be 15+ to attend this class.

Class length: 2hrs. Price: $90pp.

This is a one-off 2hr introductory hand-building class - enough time to get a taste of what’s possible, pick up some new skills and create something you’ll be proud of!

The vibe: Immersive, energising and expressive.

Make, decorate and get in the zone. Then practice humility, you’ll need it for all the compliments at your next soirée!

Get dressed for success.

Wear something that’s easy to clean, or that you don’t mind getting a bit dirty. Covered shoes are ideal and think about keeping long hair out of the way.

The boring bits.

Unfortunately, the kiln gods are a capricious bunch and while we do our best to minimise the possibility, breakages may happen during firing. We cannot offer refunds for damaged items.

Getting there.

We’re at 9 Addison Rd in Marrickville, opposite The Vic, right near the intersection of Enmore Rd and seconds from Enmore Park.

Dare to drive? There is ample parking along either side of Enmore Park, on Llewellyn St or Victoria Rd. There are also spaces along Addison Rd or any of the nearby side streets.

Save the world, one bus trip at a time. Routes 355, 423, 426, 428, 430 all stop close by - alight at Enmore Park and pop around the corner.
